Musical Magic
I love listening to music. And certain songs can really influence how I feel. Studies have found that listening to music activates our entire brains, creating the potential for us to use music to improve the way we think, behave, and feel. Jenni Rook, MT-BC, LCPC a music therapist, recommends the following 6 steps for creating your own stress-reducing playlist:
6 Steps to Making a Stress-Reducing Playlist
1. Use familiar music
Try starting with your own music first. Music that you have positive associations with.
2. Use music that you enjoy
3. Find music that speaks to you
4. Match your mood with key elements of music
Tempo. Pick a piece of music that matches your heartbeat, your breathing.
Volume. Are you feeling loud or soft?
Harmony and Timbre.
5. Consider music without lyrics
If you are using music for the purpose of trying to relax, you want to allow your mind to wander without consciously focusing on lyrics.
6. Order your list to help you reach an intended mood
Consider your goal. Do you want to feel energetic, happy, or relaxed after listening to your playlist? Organize your songs to bring you from your current emotional state to your desired.
